Now used by thousands of teachers across the country! Top 10 UK Educational app!

The 'Guided Reading Questioning Framework' (Narrative Texts) is Alan Peat Ltd's first reading app. It has been designed to help busy teachers to structure their text-based questioning in ten key areas: knowledge, prediction, comprehension, application, analysis, speculation, empathic response, synthesis, evaluation and elaboration.
Each 'area' is treated as a questioning outcome and is comprised of a series of questions - these are framed in a lower order, middle order and higher order manner. As such the content of the app represents a differentiated (critical thinking) developmental continuum of questions.
The app is easy to use and will help to avoid ad hoc and/or repetitive questioning in guided reading sessions. Each 'area' includes a note-taking section. Notes are saved 'in app' but can also be backed-up using Dropbox. Further questions designed by staff and/or clusters of schools can therefore be added, making this an ever-expanding resource.
A 'must-have' app for all schools and the first in a series of apps to support the development of reading in schools.

The Alan Peat Pocket App of Exciting Sentences
The Alan Peat Pocket App of Exciting Sentences

£1.99
Alan Peat’s sentence types are already used in 22 countries. Now, for the first time, they are available as an app with genre-links and in-built interactivity.

The Alan Peat Pocket App of Exciting Sentences provides teachers and parents with 25 ‘consistent-language’ sentence types, clearly explained and right there on either iPad or iPhone instantly at hand.

The app includes an Introduction to the sentence types with THREE sets of examples for each sentence: generic examples; genre-specific examples (both fiction and non-fiction) and Mathew Sullivan’s Introductory language/ Intermediate language/ Higher order examples.

Additionally the App includes a ‘Developmental Continuum’ designed to help schools and parents to understand when (and how!) to best introduce the sentence types – ideal for ‘whole school’ approaches to grammar.

For ease-of-use the app also features a ‘Sentence Grammar Glossary’ using plain English to explain complex grammatical features of sentences, with the useful addition of embedded teaching tips.

Finally the app also allows users to make and save their own personal notes/ lesson plans directly in-app. You can also back them up to Google Drive, Dropbox or email them directly from the app: three handy tools for networks of schools seeking to share ideas and planning!...
Exciting Sentences: Pupil Edition
Exciting Sentences: Pupil Edition

£1.99
Alan Peat’s incredibly popular and effective Exciting Sentences approach is now available for pupils, students and teachers to use in the brand new App, Exciting Sentences: Pupil Edition.
For the first time, students will have their own App which allows them to:
• Learn about each of the 25 Exciting Sentence Types (from Alan Peat’s Writing Exciting Sentences) including descriptions and examples.
• Create and save their own examples of each sentence type directly in the app.
• Document (in app) examples of the sentence types they have discovered while reading.
• Record notes and ideas for each sentence type.
• Share all of their examples and notes via Dropbox, or print them directly from the app.

A grammar glossary for students has also been included. This relates to the sentence types and will help pupils to understand the technical terms for the grammar rules they see and use. They can also save notes within this section of the app.
All of this will help them to, over time, build up a running record of the exciting sentences and grammar that they understand and can use in their own writing.

The app has also been designed to be used by up to ten pupils at a time.
Each pupil within the group has their own area of the app where they can create their own examples and notes for each sentence type. Each group member’s examples and notes are then added to a group “page” called ‘Our Sentence Types’ (as opposed to the ‘My Sentence Types’ section for individuals) which means anyone in the group, or the teacher, can quickly glance over all of the group members’ work in one place – great for collaborative work and peer editing! This can also be printed. The app also caters for a single pupil working independently.
Teacher control: teachers have access to a settings page, allowing them to remove individual pupils from a group, or to clear all data from the app for future use by a new group or individual. This is password protected. The password is currently set at "Teacher1"....
Word-Juice
Word-Juice

£0.99
Welcome to WordJuice

Your task is simple: squeeze as much juice from the oranges as you can in three minutes.

To squeeze juice from an orange, you have to create words! Each orange is divided into 8 segments (three vowels and five consonants) AND a central vowel. Tap the letters to make a word, then tap ‘GO’ to squeeze the orange and start juicing! Each word must be three or more letters long and MUST include the central vowel. The longer the word, the more juice you’ll make and if you use words with trickier letters, such as J, Q and Z, you’ll make even more juice! If you make a mistake, tap the ‘X’ button to delete, one letter at a time, or hold the ‘X’ button to clear the whole word.

After squeezing three or more words from an orange, you can ask for “FRESH FRUIT PLEASE”. You will be given a fresh orange with new letters. Only do this if you are running out of words to squeeze from your orange, as the multiplier will reset to zero! The more words you squeeze from a single orange, the more effectively the points multiplier works. Reach the top of the multiplier and start scoring BIG points!

Every time you “squeeze” a word you’ll light a part of the multiplier meter. Reach the top to start scoring BIG points! But be careful. If you end up asking for “FRESH FRUIT PLEASE” the multiplier will reset.

Game Center enabled to add to the fun!!

Happy juicing!

Please note: This app requires iOS 7.0 or later....

A Second App of Exciting Sentences
A Second App of Exciting Sentences

£1.99
Alan Peat’s original sentence types are already used in schools in 22 different countries around the world. In 2013, in collaboration with Mathew Sullivan, 30 brand new sentence types were introduced. Now, these sentences are available as an app, which also includes direct links to both fiction and non-fiction writing, as well as teaching ideas, extension activities, and example sentences from teachers and pupils around the U.K.

‘A Second App of Exciting Sentences’ provides teachers and parents with 30 ‘consistent language’ sentence types, clearly explained and easily accessible on iPhone or iPad.

The app includes an introduction to, and an explanation of, the sentence types as a whole-school approach, both from the standpoint of an international literacy consultant, and of a full-time primary teacher.

Each sentence type is then introduced via a range of genre-specific examples, which could also be used in class. Coverage continues with an explanation of the grammatical features of each sentence, where and when they might be used, and how teachers might introduce them to pupils in the classroom. Teaching tips and genre links are provided for each sentence type, and ideas for extension work are also included.

Finally, the app allows users to make and save their own personal notes/lesson plans directly in-app. You can also back them up to Dropbox and email them directly from the app: two handy tools for networks of schools seeking to share ideas and planning!...
A Critical Thinking Framework for Guided Reading (Fiction and Non-Fiction)
A Critical Thinking Framework for Guided Reading (Fiction and Non-Fiction)

£1.99
‘A Critical Thinking Questioning Framework for Guided Reading' (Fiction and Non-fiction) is the second in a series of reading apps from Alan Peat Ltd. Written by Bryn Goodman, this is the follow up to Alan Peat’s hugely popular ‘Guided Reading Questioning Framework’

It has been designed to help busy teachers to structure their text-based questioning in ten key areas:
Explanation of a Character’s Motives
Textual Anatomy
Recasting
Sequencing
Inference
Deduction
Purpose of The Text
Authorial Technique
Comparing Texts
Extracting Information

Where applicable each area includes a continuum of both fiction and non-fiction questions divided into six key sections: Knowledge, Comprehension, Application, Analysis, Synthesis and Evaluation. These can be used to develop or reinforce children’s skills through critical thinking.

The areas covered in the app have been identified through analysis of UK Key Stage 2 SATs papers from 2004-2015. Regardless of tests, these skills are fundamental to children’s comprehension of texts and will help them to develop the critical thinking skills they will need as they progress.
